Hello, good day!
My name is Ruben Torres, I am the Director/Chief Instructor of KIDO
RYU from Brooklyn, New York.
I will be doing most of the data entry here at
KIDO was founded in 1970 by my teacher
Sambonim William Velez.
It's foundation comes from one of the traditional arts from Korea
called "Hapkido".
In the early days (late 60's and early 70's we were members of the International Hapkido Association
and the International Tae Kwon Do Association).
Sambonim was very receptive to adapting technique that worked! He
also had no problem breaking tradition when it came to sharing the knowledge. Whom ever gets the "technique" gets it.
There was only one level in the school: "Basic". We did not have specialists, we
did everything on the curriculum.
He would train anyone off the street if they had the desire and commitment to training.
This led to our leaving these organizations in order to express his art form, his own way,, and
to bestow the knowledge on the students that through consistent and repetitve practice developed the self, and adhered to
the KIDO training foundation.
He had a strong requirement regarding formal education though. Most
of his students were college educated.
Lately, I look around and many of the Masters and their schools are no
longer available to the community.
The real estate market in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York has seen skyrocketing prices for the littlest
of spaces.
The entire country is trying to make ends meet.
Families must use their resources to maintain their livelyhood.
Many instructors have had to take on jobs that pull them away from the arts in order to survive.
For the past thirty years, many people speak to me regarding
their wishes to improve the quality of their lives or the lives of their loved ones. So
they are looking for a place to train. A Master to guide them or lead them safely
through the training or some rehabilitative exercises to assist their healing process.
These days, to have a public place to offer your classes, one would have
to be a magician to realize that type of income necessary to maintain it. Since 1999 we have enlarged our community
to an international one. so to continue to be available to the community, we are available on line to direct,
recommend, post, etc. information regarding the martial arts around the world.
Please feel free to email us your event information, announcements, etc.
Our classes have moved outside
(all year round) and they are limited to adults.
Please contact us for Seminars, Clinics,
Cross-training, Classes, Tournaments, Demonstrations, and your fund raisers. (children's organizations or causes)
We are always happy to accommodate a receptive audience.
ps. student applicants must come with written recommendations to be considered, and they must be
able to get to and from classes on time, prepared for the lesson.
RT
Our Mission
This site will act as a sound board for our local, national and international activities and participation
in the future.
This cyber site is intended to keep our members and associates informed of our current work in the science
of KIDO RYU, and it will also lend itself to the posting of martial arts events around the world.
We ask in advance
that all personal issues be conducted else where.
It has long been our posture that we have no honorary certifications
in KIDO RYU, and all applicants must come recommended to be considered.
